Day Nine in Mumbai

Originally I wanted to go to the Borivali National Park, and there especially the Kanheri Caves. But a trimendous strong rainfall at noon time prevented that. So most of the time today I used stay in my hotel room to rest and to prepare my presentation for next weekend in Bangalore (WMF mission).

I had reflected a few things that I want to write down. I especially hope that they could be helpful for the next team.

The first thing that I want to write about is clothes. This is surely one of the first questions we have asked: What should I take with me? So my experience is take long trousers and longsleeved or shortsleeved shirts with you. If your office is climatized, you will feel shortsleeved shirts too cold. If it is not climatized, you will feel longsleeved shirts too long. You don't need jackets or ties. Jeans is more a leisure cloth. I scarcely see anyone wear jeans in office. For the weekend or afterwork you can wear T-shirt or shortsleeved shirts, and can wear short trousers. But I have noticed that only very few locals wear short trousers, even in the hottest day. My impression is that in India people do take very care of how they look. And long trousers is considered more decent than short trousers. So if you are with IBM team members, short trousers may be ok, but if you are on leisure time with your clients, maybe long trousers (jeans would also be ok at this time. Jeans is among young people more stylish in the after work time) would show more respect. It is more uncomfortable, especially in the humid and hot air, but it has also one good: It would protect you against mosquitoes. In office you would wear leather shoes. After work sandal and sport shoes are both ok. Sport shoes seems to be considered more stylish from the youth. I personally prefer sport shoes because first of all the street is very dirty, if you wear sandal, you get your feet dirty very fast and you must take care that you don't step in to water puddle. It can be very uncomfortable. And again, sport shoes protect you against mosquitos.

Food in India is totally different than anything I know. It is different to the western food and different to the Chinese food. It is different because it uses very different spices and because the preparation is different. This said in general it is also to say that India is such a diverse country that even Indians may feel food from other part of the country or from other people of the country strange und suspective. As I walked with the gay people arround the muslims market they also only tried things that they know of, and many things seemd so strange to them that they didn't try. The Indian food is not very hot as many say. To my taste it is only moderately hot at best, but then again, I am accustomered even with Sichuan Food, so my opinion is heavily biased.

People often say, you must open your mind and your heart if you want to learn and love India. To understand what this means, you must really be here and contact the people. I think it is difficult to really love this country: It is noisy (according to the theory about the harm of noise of the western scientists all Indians must have died on depression or cancer or heart attack during their thirties), it is dirty, it is over crowded, it is chaotic, the beggers on the market are annoying, the traffic are dangerous, the slums undescribable. To put it short: After I saw Bombay, I can imaging where most of the End Time fictions and films like "Total Recall" or "Bladerunner" or "Shadowrun" get their inspiration. Indeed, the underworld of "Total Recall" seemd even nice compared to Dharavi.

To put it in one sentence: It seems impossible that life can survive here at all. But yes, here is full of life. Tens of millions of people call here their home. They are born here, they go to school here, they work here. They have even fun here! Driving through Dharavi how clean and colorful the clothes the women wear is an unbelievable contrast to how the buildings and the streets look like. Men, especially the hard working men, usually used to wear more dirty clothes, because they would get dirty. But if they are going out, meeting friends, they would change their clothes. You can often see people wearing shirts, jeans, shoes, that are very stylish and beautiful. On the street you can see so many different people that you wonder how they can exist beside each other at all. You can hear the mosques call for praise and see the moslims gather at the mosques and wash themselves while direct beside them the market is full of life and people doing their business, selling, buying, eating. You can see women with burqa walking on the street directly beside women with sari. Where in the world would you see suh scenes so often?

And now I come to the open your mind and open your heart part of this blog entry. If you think about all this, think about all the miracles exist in this after-apocalypse-world-in-real, if you think you can find the answer, or find the way to the answer, then I think you have opened your mind and your heart to this mysterious country.

In Büro trägt man Lederschuhe.
