For the weekend I took a small vacation from CSC and went to Bangalore, in a mission of Wikimedia Foundation (WMF). One month back in Buenos Aires I met Achal, who is a member of the Advisory Board of WMF, and I told him that I was going to Mumbai in September. He immediately invited me to make a talk in Bangalore, where a WMF India chapter would soon be created. As topic he would like to have me talk about the Chinese Wikipedia. This is very funny, because five years ago, during the first Wikimania conference in Frankfurt I joined a panel and made a talk there about the Chinese Wikipedia, Achal was that time the moderator of the panel and had introduced me and the others. Later Achal told me, that one of the people who had joined the same panel and introduced the Wikipedia in Iran, Hossein Derakhshan, is at the moment put into jail in Teheran because of his blogging. The news had really shocked me.
The taxi took me to Achal's flat and I caught him still sleeping. He was working late. Achal has a very nice flat, big, in a very mixed neighbourhood. We talked abuot different things arround the Foundation. Later his girlfriend arrived from Dehli. We went to a neighbourhood restaurant for lunch, a very simple restaurant with a lot of workers in it. I would not have dared to dash in alone. But they make marvelous dosas.
One of the topics we talked about is India and China. Achal told me before the presentation that a lot of Indians are very interested in China. In today's Times of India there were more than five articles that is related to China. Obviously this is also the reason why people are interested in Chinese Wikipedia and its struggle with the government. He pointed at a construction site and said: This is what I mean what is the difference: That is a small bridge, and since six years they are working on it. He criticized the Indian government that they do nothing that is rationally necessary. You must shout, must engage your self in activists movement to beat them to get things done. On the other hand, I argued, in China you don't even get the chance to shout.
Achal suggested me to make a head massage, which he said is unique in India. It is not only a head massage, the masseur pull an oil at first in my hair, the oil smells strongly like peppermint. Then he began to knock, knead and pat my head. At first hard, later soft. After that he worked though my back and arms. Then he used an electronic device, sort of a vibrator again through the head, back and arms. Actually I had a light headache at the morning of that day, maybe because of the early stand up and the flight. But after the massage the headache is gone. I think I will try that some time in Bombay again.
After a shower which washed the oil away from the head we started out to the Center of Internet and Society where I should make my talk. I was quite nervous because I don't know what awaits me. I am also nervouse because I had not very much time for the preparation of the talk. It is by no mean a "Standard Talk" for me. It is a small round of people, about ten. I started to introduce the Chinese Wikipedia, its content, its community and the Taiwan and Hongkong chapters that we have at the moment. After that was discussion and questions. Two of the guys were there who are preparing the Indian chapter. They are both very experienced Wikipedians and very insightful and thoughtful. They helped me a lot in answering questions because at some point I noticed that how I answer questions are very different than how they answer questions. I tend to see the complexity of the community and its problems while the questionairs are still beginners. So my answer may be too complicated, not understandable, or even scary for them, which is by no mean my intention.
In the evening Achal made a small party in his flat with a few of his best friends. Achal is a typical intelecture and bohemian: He engages himself in Wikimedia and is an activist for human right, social and environmental problems, he is a researcher about intellecteur properties, his friends are artists, film makers, scientists. It was a very funny party with lots of talks and food.
Für das Wochenende habe ich einen kleinen Urlaub von CSC genommen und bin nach Bangalore geflogen, in Auftrag von Wikimedia Foundation (WMF). Vor einem Monat habe ich in Buenos Aires Achal getroffen. Achal ist Mitglied der Advisory Board der WMF. Als ich ihm sagte, dass ich in September in Bombay bin hatte er mich sofort zu eine Presentation in Bangalore eingeladen, wo der zukünftige WMF India Verein gerade im Entstehen ist. Als Thema für die Präsentation hat er die Chinesische Wikipedia vorgeschlagen. Das ist sehr witzig da vor fünf Jahre, während der ersten Wikimania Konferenz in Frankfurt habe ich Achal bei einem Podiumsdiskussion zum ersten Mal getroffen. Damals hatte ich ebenfalls die Chinesische Wikipedia vorgestellt, während Achal der Moderator der Podiumsdiskussion war. Später sagte er mir, dass ein der Teilnehmer an der Podiumsdiskussion, Hossein Derakhshan, der damals Wikipedia in Iran vorgestellt hatte, sitzt im Moment gerade in Teheran im Gefängnis, der Grund war weil sein Blog die Religion beleidigt hat. Das war wirklich eine schockierende Nachricht.
Der Taxi brachte mich zu Achals Wohnung und ich überraschte ihn noch am Schlafen. Er hatte bis sehr spät gearbeitet. Achal hat eine sehr schöne Wohnung, groß, in einem gemischten Wohngebiet. Wir redeten über verschiedenen Sachen um die Foundation. Später kam seine Freundin aus Dehli an. Wir gingen zu einem Restaurante in der Umgebung für Mittagsessen. Es ist ein sehr einfaches Restaurant, mit viele Arbeiter dort mittagessen. Alleine hätte ich nicht gewagt, darein zu gehen. Aber sie machen wunderbare Dosas.
Ein der Themen, über den wir geredet haben, war Indien und China. Achal sagte mir vor der Präsentation dass viele Inder sich für China interessieren. Allein in der heutigen Times of India gab es mehr als fünf Artikels, die mit China zu tun haben. Offenbar war das auch der Grund dafür, warum sie sich für Chinesische Wikipedia und ihre schwierige Beziehung mit der Regierung interessieren. Achal zeigte mir eine Baustelle und sagte: Das ist was ich meine, wenn ich von Unterschied sprechen. Das das ist eine kleine Brücke, aber sie bauen schon seit sechs Jahren daran. Er kritisierte die indische Regierung weil sie nichts tun, was rational notwendig ist. Du musst schreien, musst Dich selbst als Aktivist engagieren und sie schlagen, bis Sachen getan werden. Auf der anderen Seite, sagte ich, in China hast Du nicht einmal die Chance, um zu schreien.
Achal schlug mir eine Kopfmassage vor. Er sagte, dass dies einzigartig für Indien ist. Es ist nicht nur ein Kopfmassage, der Masseur gießt ein Öl in meine Haare, das starknach Pfefferminz riecht. Dann begann er meinen Kopf zu klopfen, kneten und schlagen. Zuerst hart, dann weich. Danach arbeitete er weiter an meinem Rücken und an den Armen. Zum Schluss bearbeitete er den Kopf, Rücken und Armen mit eine Art Vibrator. Ich hatte, wahrscheinlich wegen dem frühen Aufstehen und wegen dem Flug, leichtes Kopfschmerzen, aber nach der Behandlung war er weg. Ich glaube, ich werde es in Bombay wieder versuchen.
Nach eine Dusche, die das Öl aus meinen Haaren gewaschen hat, starteten wir zum Center of Internet and Society, wo ich meine Präsentation halten soll. Ich war ziemlich nervös da ich nicht wusste, was mich erwartete. Ich war auch nervös weil ich nur sehr kurze Zeit für die Vorbereitung hatte. Es war keines Falls ein "Standardpräsentation" für mich. Es war eine kleine Runde, etwa zehn Zuhörer. Ich begann mit der Vorstellung von Chinesischer Wikipedia, den Inhalt, die Community and die Vereine in Taiwan und Hongkong. Danach gab es Diskussion und Fragen. Zwei der Zuhörer waren Leute, die den indischen Verein organiseren. Sie sind beide sehr erfahrene Wikipedianer, verfügen tiefen Einsichten. Sie haben bei meinen Antworten sehr geholfen. Ich habe bemerkt dass ich mittlerweile so tief in meinen Gedanken mit den Schwierigkeiten der Community bin, dass ich die Fragen zu kompliziert antworte. Aber die Zuhörer waren noch alle Anfänger. So war meine Antwort für sie zu kompliziert, nicht verständlich oder sogar abschreckend. Das war natürlich nicht meine Absicht.
Am Abend veranstartete Achal eine kleine Party in seine Wohnung, mit einigen seiner besten Freunden. Achal ist ein typischer Intellektueller und Boheme: Er engagiert für Wikimedia und als Aktivist in Menschenrechte, sozielen und Umweltproblemen. Er ist ein Forscher der Geistigen Eigentums. Seine Freunde sind Künstler, Filmmacher, Wissenschaftler. Es war eine sehr lustige Party mit vielen Gesprächen und Essen.
这个周末我从CSC放了一个小假去班加罗尔，去完成一个维基媒体基金会的使命。一个月前在布宜诺斯艾利斯我遇到Achal。Achal是维基媒体基金会顾问团的成员。我告诉他我九月要去印度后他立刻邀请我去班加罗尔做一个报告，他建议我报告中文维基百科全书。这很有意思因为五年前我在法兰克福的维基年会上首次遇到Achal的时候是在一次论坛上，当时我也是介绍中文维基百科，而Achal则是论坛的主持人。Achal后来告诉我说当时在论坛上介绍维基百科在伊朗的那个人Hossein Derakhshan现在因为他的部落格被告玷污宗教而在德黑兰被捕了。这个新闻太让我吃惊了。
我坐出租车到Achal的家，他还在睡觉，因为他晚上工作非常晚。Achal的宿舍很不错，很大，位于一个混合的居民区。我们谈论了关于基金会的不同事情。后来他的女朋友从新德里到达，我们一起去吃午餐。我们去的是一个普通的小餐馆，里面有许多当地的工人。要是我一个人的话我肯定不感进去，但是他们做的Dosa非常好。
我们谈到的话题之一是印度和中国。Achal告诉我印度人对中国非常感兴趣。在今天的《印度时报》里就有五篇关于中国内容的报道。这显然也是为什么他们对中文维基百科感兴趣的原因。他指着一个建筑工地对我说：这就是我所说的区别：那只不过是一座小桥，可是他们已经在那座工地上花了六年的时间了。他批评印度政府不做理性应该做的事情。你必须喊，必须参加民间活动，必须揍他们才能使他们干事。另一方面，我说，在中国你连喊的机会都没有。
Achal建议我去做一次头按摩。他说这是印度独有的。其实这不仅是头按摩。按摩师在我的头发里浇一种闻上去像薄荷的油，然后开始对我的头敲打捏推。一开始很厉害，后来逐渐缓和。弄完了头又继续弄背和手臂。最后他还用一个振荡器之类的机器又把头、背和手臂加工了一遍。事实上我的确有点头疼，可能因为早起，然后坐飞机的原因，但是他按摩后我的确不痛了。也许我回到孟买后应该再试几次。
然后我冲凉，把头上的油冲掉。我们出发去万联网和社会中心，我要做报告的地方。我有点紧张，因为我不知道我会碰到什么，另外我准备这次报告的时间很短。这并非我的“典型报告”。听众不多，只有十来个人。我开始介绍中文维基百科、其内容、社群以及台湾和香港的分会。然后是讨论。在听众里有两个经验很丰富的维基人，他们帮助我回答了许多问题。我发现我现在考虑社群的问题实在太复杂了，因此回答起来也太复杂了。但是这些听众大多数是外来人，因此我的回答对他们来说太复杂、不可理解，甚至于可怕，这当然不是我的意图。
傍晚Achal在家里举办了一个小聚会，邀请了一些他的好朋友。Achal是一个典型的知识分子和波希米亚主义者：他为维基媒体出力，参加人权、社会和环境问题的活动。他的朋友们有艺术家、电影导演和学者。这是一个很有趣的小聚会，许多讨论和食物。
With the rain it comes the mosquitos. After my arrival in the hotel I was still very excited of the events in Bangalore. So I stayed awake and write my reports to the board, and killed ten in a row. My soul would not get into Nirvana in this life (sigh). I went to bed at 5 am and out of bed at 9am, went to the roof to meet the others who remained in Bombay. Clai just came back from their Himalaja tour. It is good to see him here.
Mit dem Regen kommen die Mücken. Nach meine Ankunft im Hotel war ich noch immer so aufgeregt, dass ich wach blieb und mein Bericht an das Board schrieb. Während dessen hatte ich die Gelegenheit, zehn Mücken zu töten. Meine Seele wird es in diesem Leben die Nirvana wohl nicht mehr erreichen (Seufze). Um fünf Uhr morgens ging ich erst ins Bett und stand bereits um neun auf, um die in Bombay verbleibenden Kollegen auf dem Dachrestaurant beim Frühstücken zu treffen. Clai war gerade von seinen Himalaja-Tour zurückgekehrt. Es ist gut ihn wieder bei uns zu haben.
蚊子跟着雨到来。我回到旅店后还很兴奋，因此开始向理事会写班加罗尔的报道。与此同时打死了十只蚊子。这生我的灵魂是无法到达无界西天了。早上五点钟我才睡觉，九点又起床到楼顶餐厅去看留在孟买的同事。Clai刚从他们的喜马拉雅旅行回来，看到他回到很高兴。
