Day Seven in Mumbai

Day Seven in Mumbai. Today is the first day since our arrival that we really have time for us alone: It is weekend! So we decided to go to the downtown. Aside of our very short and chaotic visite of the Gateway of India this was the first time that we have really time to explore the city. The adventure began with the ride with the Mumbai Suburb Railway. There seemed to be a sort of queue before the ticket counter, but as Dawn later found out, the only way to actually get to the counter is ellbow and presure.

The train was very crowded, despite weekend, despite we started at noon time, and despite first class. The inside of the train have seats and staying place. People hanging directly at the open door of the train, or even outside of the door. The train emptied trimendously after it reached the downtown area.

The downtown has a lot of old buildings from the time of the British Empire, so there are places that looks like Oxford, especially at the Oval Maiden. Most of these buildings need renovation.

A high light of our first walk was the Blue Synagogue of Mumbai. It is very beautiful, and its white and blue color stands distinguishly against the grey and brown color of other buildings.

For searching of lunch we wandered a very long way, back to Victoria Terminal. The Victoria Terminal is an amusing building. It think it is fully justified to be put in the World Heritage site. But like all the other buildings from that time it is totally worn and need renovation. Die buildings beside the Terminal is also very interesting.

After lunch (at four o'clock) we wandered to the north, to a market area. The noise here is indescribable. It is like in a disco. I wonder what a decibel number would I get if I make a measurement. Colleagues went into a clothes market inside of a building. I went out soon. I find it very claustrophobic.

Later I separated myself from the group. While they went to a beach for a beer, I joined a group local gays to visite the night market of the ismalic neighbourhood. It is still Ramadan, so after darf there are lots of live and meal on the street. The guys are all very warm hearted, nice and really beautiful to see. The market is very typical for Asia, over crowded, loud, with lots of street food. We ate like indian type. With hand, here a bite, there a bite, until we had tried lots of food, and are full. And when we wander from one food place to the other we make shopping.

What I had found always very interesting is that despite all the other cultural differences gays all over the world has their common culture, what is for me amazing every time to see.

Interestingly all of us are from outside of the city, from the western neighbourhoods. So we ride with the train again back. This time in second class. Ok, it is more crowded. As the train came to the station one feels a very strong push from behind one.

I came back to hotel at about 12 o'clock.

Tag Sieben in Bombai. Heute ist der erste Tag seit unsere Ankunft, wo wir wirklich Zeit für uns haben: Es ist Wochenende! Wir beschließen, in die Stadt zu fahren. Außer unser sehr kurze und chaotische Besuch am Gateway of India ist das das erste Mal, dass wir wirklich die Stadt erkunden können. Das Abenteuer begann schon mit der Fahrt mit dem Mumbai Suburb Railway. Augenscheinlich gibt es eine Art Warteschlange vor dem Schalter, aber wie Dawn später heraus fand, hilft hauptsächlich Ellenbogen und Drängeln weiter.

Obwohl es Wochenende war, obwohl wir um Mittagszeit startete und obwohl wir mit dem First Class fuhren, war der Zug überfüllt. Menschen hängen direkt an den offenen Türen, manchen sogar hängen draussen. Als der Zug Stadtmittel nähete, wurde es leerer.

Der Stadtmittel hat viele Gebäude aus der britischen Zeit. Es gibt Orte, die wie Oxford aussehen, beosnders am Oval Maiden. Meisten Gebäuden bedürfen Renovierungen.

Das blaue Synagoge sticht durch ihre weißblaue Farbe besonders aus den umgebenden braun, grauen Gebäuden hervor.

Zum Mittagsessen kamen wir zurück zur Victoria Terminal. Es ist eine sehr eindrucksstarke Gebäude. Es ist völlig berechtigt, sie in die Weltelbe aufzunehmen. Allerdings wie allen anderen Gebäuden aus diese Zeit ist sie völlig heruntergenommen und renovierungsbedürftig. Auch die Gebäuden neben dem Victoria Terminal sind sehr interessant.

Nach dem Mittagsessen (um vier Uhr) wanderten wir Richtung Norden, zu einem Marktgebiet. Der Lärm hier ist unbeschreiblich. Es ist wie in einem Disko. Mich würde mal interessieren, wie viele Dezibel man hier messen würde. Kollegen gingen in einem Textilienmarkt in einem Gebäude hinein. Ich kam schnell wieder raus. In der Enge war es sehr klaustrophobisch.

Später trennte ich mich von der Gruppe, die zu einem Beach zu einem Bier wollen. Ich schließ mich um eine lokale Schwulengruppe an und besuchte mit ihnen zusammen die Nachtmarkt in einem muslimischen Wohngebiet. Es ist gerade Ramadan. Nach der Dunkelheit war die Straße volle Leben und Futter. Die Jungs sind alle sehr warmherzig, nett und hübsch. Das Markt ist sehr typisch für asiatische Märkte: überfüllt, laut, und viele Essensstände. Wir aßen nach indische Sitte, mit der Hand, hier etwas, dort etwas, bis wir viele Stände probiert haben und alle bis oben gefüllt waren. Und wenn wir gerade von einem Stand zum nächsten wanderten, machten wir Shopping.

Ich finde es immer sehr interessant dass abgesehen von all den kulturellen Unterschiede alle Schwulen auf der ganzen Welt ihre gemeinsame Kultur besitzen.

Interessanterweise wohnen wir alle außerhalb der Stadt, aus den westlichen Stadtgebieten. Also fuhren wir zusammen mit dem Zug zurück. Diesmal in zweite Klasse. Ok, es ist schon überfüllter. Als der Zug an der Station ankam, füllte man einen starken Druck von hinten, der einen aus dem Zug drückt.

Ich kam um zwölf Uhr ins Hotel zurück.

孟买第七天。今天是我们到这里以来第一个自由日：今天是周末！我们决定去市中心。除了第二天短暂地去印度门外这是我们首次真正有时间看这座城市。 冒险从座孟买郊区铁路开始。虽然好像买票是排队的，但手后来Dawn发现只有通过手肘和推挤才能到达卖票的窗口。

虽然是周末、我们中午出发、坐一等车，车非常挤。有的人挂在敞开的车门上，或者甚至车门外。车到市中心是开始变空。

市中心有许多大英帝国时期留下来的老建筑，因此有些地方看上去像牛津，尤其在Oval Maiden附近。但是大多数这些建筑需要修理。

孟买的蓝色犹太会堂的蓝白色在周围灰色、褐色的建筑之间非常瞩目。

午饭时我们回到维多利亚终点站。这是一座非常可观的建筑。像许多其它当时的建筑一样它很破旧，需要整修。但是把它纳入世界遗产是有理的。它周围的建筑也很可观。

午饭后（四点钟）我们跑到北部的一个市场区。这里的响声无法描述。就像在一个迪斯科里一样。我想知道这里能测量到多少分贝。同事们跑进一座卖衣料的商店。我很快就退出来了，我觉得里面太挤了。

后来我和他们分手。他们去一个海滨喝啤酒，我跟一群当地的同志们逛夜市。我们去一个穆斯林区。目前还是莱卖丹月，因此天黑后街上非常热闹，有许多卖小吃的摊子。我和他们一起的那帮人都很热心、很友好、非常漂亮。这个夜市是一个很典型的亚洲夜市：拥挤、喧闹、许多小吃。我们用印度方法逛：吃的时候用手抓，这里一点，那里一点，直到我们，直到我们吃饱。在摊子之间他们买东西。

我每次都觉得很有意思的是尽管各地的风俗不同但是世界所有地方都有一种共同的同志文化。

有趣的是我们所有人都住在市郊，住在西部的市区，因此我们可以一起坐车回去。这次坐的是二等车。要挤得多。而且车到站后后面会有很强的推力，大家都挤着要下车。

我十二点钟回到旅店。

Day Six in Mumbai. Today in portrait is Dawn Moravec. Dawn lives and works in Ottawa, Canada. Dawn is a marketing manager there.

Dawn works with Do Yeong together for the NGO IVolunteer. Do Yeong used to joke and say they are the Beast and the Beauty. Well, I disagree definitively with the Beast part, but I totally agree with the Beauty part. Dawn is one of the most beautiful woman I have seen. She is tall, I believe the tallest among us all, has a figure like a model, and is very very intelligent. She is always laughing.

IVolunteer, for which Dawn and Do Yeong are working now, is a very interesting organization. They make contacts between companies who want to donate volunteer's work and show social responsibility and NGOs who need volunteers for their work. It is a very young organization, with dedicated young people working there. Dawn and Do Yeong has among us the shortest way to work. They only need to walk 10 minutes to go to their workplace.

Now we had been in our work for a total week. Last evening everyone was sort of exhausted. We took a short dinner at a sandwich-chain (the girls only wanted to have some coffee) and said good night to each other.

Während ich mit dem Beast-Teil entschieden nicht einverstanden bin, stimme ich das Schönen-Teil völlig zu. Dawn ist eine der schönsten Frauen die ich je gesehen habe. Sie ist groß, ich glaube, sie ist die größte unter uns, hatte ein Figur wie ein Modell und ist sehr sehr intelligent. Sie lacht viel.

Die Organization, für die Dawn und Do Yeong arbeiten, IVolunteer, ist eine sehr interessante Organization. Sie stellen Kontakte zwischen Firmen, die Volunteersarbeit spenden und so ihre soziale Verantwortung zeigen wollen, und NGOs her, die Volunteersarbeit brauchen. Es ist eine sehr junge Organization, mit sehr enthusiastische junge Menschen, die dort arbeiten. Dawn und Do Yeong haben den kürzesten Arbeitsweg von uns allen. Sie brauchen nur zehn Minuten zu Fuß zu gehen, um an ihren Arbeitsplatz zu kommen.

Nun haben wir eine ganze Woche hier gearbeitet. Gestern Abend waren alle ziemlich erschöpft. Wir hatten einen kurzen Dinner an eine Sandwichkette (die Mädels wollten nur Kaffee trinken) bevor wir gute Nacht zu einander sagten.

孟买第六天。今天的专题报道是Dawn Moravec（道恩·莫拉维奇）。Dawn在加拿大渥太华工作和生活。她是市场经理。

Dawn和Do Yeong一起为非政府组织IVolunteer工作。Do Yeong曾经开玩笑说他们是“美女与野兽”。 我坚决不同意野兽之说，但是完全同意美女之说。Dawn是我见过的最漂亮的妇女之一。她身材高大，好像是我们当中最高的，体形像个模特儿，非常非常聪明。她常笑。

Day Five in Mumbai

Day five in Mumbai, today's topic is Meet Miguel Castaneda. Miguel comes from Mexico, works on the IBM Mexico Guadalajara site. He is a project manager there and is responsible for the rollout and implementation of IBM production program at the local plant. He is my project partner by the CSC assignment by the Avert Society. So, every morning Miguel and I share the same car through the Mumbai rush hour traffic to our work place, we share the small office (2.5m x 2.5m) for at least eight and a half hours until six o'clock in the evening and than share the same car on our way back to hotel through the every evening rush hour. That's in total more than ten hours everyday that we face each other in a very short distance, the social time after work like dinner together with the rest of the team or our cooking class or sight seeing or junk food party not counted.

One thing that surprised me at most after the begin of our work with Avert is that there is indeed something like a global IBM-culture, even between Mexico and Germany. It is supprising how easy we found our roles in the new constellation of work, how good we cooperate with each other and how large our shared value and work attitude is. We share the same sense of how project works should look like, we have the same understanding of process, management and controling. I find this really astaunding, given the vast distance that separates us and cultural background that we don't share.

On our work we found our roles already in the first day. He more project management oriented, creating a project plan, presentation and communication with the partner management, while I more technical and problem oriented, contact and communication with the partner employee. We had formed a team in the shortest time that is like a IBM project team in the normal life.

Last evening after work we went to Kabi's house for our first indian cooking class. Kabi had invited her friend Leslie who comes originally from south India. She led the cooking class. Kabi lives in a Catholic neighbourhood near the coast to the arabic see. It is a neighbourhood that is more like a european village than anything I had seen since my arrival. Her house is a small and open house with three rooms, kitchen and sanitare facilities. There is a very small garden arround the house. Kabi has two dogs. The bigger one of the two always begs people to pet him.

For the dinner everyone of us did something. One washed and chopped tomato, the other peeled pottato, the other chopped orion, etc etc. The result of the work was astonishingly good. We had had a splended dinner.

After the dinner Kabi said that the money she collected for the materials of the meal will be donated for the movement against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

Tag fünf in Bombay. Das Thema heute ist Treffen mit Miguel Castaneda. Miguel kommt aus Mexiko, arbeitet an der IBM Lokation Guadalajara. Er ist Projektmanager und ist verantwortlich für Rollout und Implementierung von IBM Produktionsprogramme an dortigen Fertigungsstelle. Er ist mein Projektpartner bei der Avert Society. Jeden Morgen teilten Miguel und ich ein Wagen und meadern uns durch die Rush Hour Verkehr zu unserem Partner, wir teilen uns ein kleines Büro (2,5m x 2,5m) für mindestens acht Stunden pro Tag, dann wieder im gleichen Wagen durch den Rushhour zurück zum Hotel. Das macht insgesamt mehr als zehn Stunden in engstem Raum, den ich mit ihm verbringe. Die Zeiten nach der Arbeit wie zum Beispiel Abendessen, Kochlehrgang, Sightseeing oder Junk Food Party noch nicht mit eingerechnet.

Eine Sache, die mich am meisten überrascht, nachdem wir unsere gemeinsame Arbeit bei der Avert gestartet haben, war, dass es tatsächlich so etwas wie eine globale IBM-Kultur gibt, sogar in so entfernten Ländern wie Mexiko und Deutschland. Es war überraschend wie einfach wir unsere Rolle in der neuen Konstellation gefunden haben, wie gut wir mit einander zusammenarbeiten und wie ähnlich unsere Werte und Arbeitsmoral sind. Wir haben das gleiche Verständnis zu Prozessen, Management und Kontrollen. Ich finde es wirklich erstaunlich, wenn man die große Distanz und den Unterschied in kulturellen Background berücksichtigt.

Bereits am ersten Tag haben wir unsere Rolle gefunden. Er ist mehr Projektmanagement orientiert, erstellt Projektplan, präsentiert und kommuniziert mit Partnermanagement. Ich bin mehr technik- und problemorentiert, kontaktiere und kommuniziere mit Partnermitarbeiter. Wir haben in kurzeste Zeit ein Team geformt, das ein IBM-Projektteam im Alltagseinsatz sehr ähnelt.

Gestern Abend nach der Arbeit fuhren wir zu Kabis Haus für unseren ersten Indien Kochlehrgang. Kabi hatte dazu ihre Freundin Leslie verpflichtet, die aus Südindien kam. Sie führte den Lehrgang. Kabi lebt in einem katholischen Wohngebiet in der Nähe zur Küste des arabischen Meers. Es ist ein Wohngebiet, dass die größte Ähnlichkeit zu einem europäischen Dorf aufweist, das ich bislang je gesehen habe. Ihr Haus ist ein kleines, offenes Haus mit drei Zimmer, Kücher und anderen sanitären Einrichtungen. Es gibt ein kleines Garten um das Haus. Kabi hat zwei Hunde. Der Große bettelt immer, dass Leute ihn streichelt.

Für das Abendessen mussten jeder von uns was tun. Der eine wascht und schneidet die Tomaten, der andere pellt Kartoffeln, noch eine schneidet Zweibel, und so weiter. Das Ergebnis dieser Arbeit war erstaunlich gut. Wir hatten eine ausgezeichnete Mahlzeit.

Nach dem Abendessen sagte Kabi, dass das Geld, das für die Material gesammelt wird, an die Bewegung gegen Paragraphen 377 des indischen Strafgesetzes gespendet wird.

我们开始为Avert同事后最使我吃惊的是即使在墨西哥和德国之间一个共同的IBM文化的确是存在的。我们非常容易地在项目中找到了各自的角色，非常容易地开始合作，而且我们共同分享的价值观和工作态度非常相似。我们对过程、管理、监察有共同的认识。我觉得以我们之间的距离差别和文化背景差别为基础这实在很令人吃惊。

在我们工作的第一天我们就找到了各自的角色。他更加面向项目管理，制定项目计划，与顾客经理沟通和向他们展示我们的进展。我更加面向技术和问题，与客方职员交流和接触。我们组成的这个工作组与普通IBM项目组非常类似。

昨天晚上下班后我们去Kabi听我们的第一次印度烹饪课。Kabi请她的朋友Leslie来教。Leslie来自印度南部。Kabi住在一个阿拉伯海滨的天主教居民区。这是我在这里见到过的一个最像欧洲村庄的居民区。她的房子很开放，很小，有三间屋、厨房、卫生设施等。房子的周围有一座小花园。她有两条狗。其中大的那条总是缠着人要人去拍它。

晚饭每人都要奉献。有的洗和切西红柿、有的给马铃薯剥皮，有的切洋葱等等。这个合作的结果非常好。我们的晚餐非常丰盛。

晚餐后Kabi说收集的原材料的钱将捐献给反对印度刑法第377条的运动。

Day Four in Mumbai

Day Four in Mumbai. We continued our work at the Avert Society. We are doing quite good. Today we had a meeting with the manager for our project, Mr. Narayan, and talked about our project development. I think he is in good agreement with us.

Actually I what I want to blog today is Kabi, our local supporter from CDS. Kabi is one of the most friendly and helpful person I had ever met. She is a very big help for us, and she is also a very good friend for us. I think I can say this. She is born in America, had lived long time in Los Angeles. She had once worked by IBM, but now she changed to CDS and had lived a long time in Mumbai. She had picked us up from the airport, had introduced us to the city, had made the tour through the neighborhood. We can ask her almost everything about India. She stayed with us in the first two days almost until midnight, had junk food partied with us, had visited us by our partners. She is organizing for us cooking lessons, she is contacting Bollywood studios for a possibility of visit. She is just the best supporter, and more importantly, the best friend you can ever imagin.

Thanks of Wikipedia I have also found out the name of the Slum we pass everyday twice. It is Dharavi, the meanwhile second biggest Slum of Asia. I would write more about the slum later. At the moment I just want to say, that I have very high respect for people who live there and still keep themself so clean and decent and smile.

Tag Vier in Mumbai. Wir führten unsere Arbeit an der Avert Society fort und kamen gut voran. Heute hatten wir ein Treffen mit dem Manager unseres Projektes Mr. Narayan und haben über unsere Arbeit berichtet. Ich glaube er ist sehr zufrieden.

Heute möchte ich vor allem Kabi vorstellen, unsere lokale Supporterin von CDS. Kabi ist eine der freundlichste und hilfsreichste Person, die ich je getroffen habe. Sie ist eine große Hilfe für uns und auch eine sehr gute Freundin für uns alle. Ich glaube, ich kann das so behaupten. Sie wurde in Amerika geboren, hatte lange Zeit in Los Angeles gewohnt. Hatte früher für IBM gearbeitet und ist jetzt bei CDS. Sie wohnt schon seit sehr lange in Mumbai. Sie hatte uns am Flughafen empfangen, hatte uns die Stadt vorgestellt, hatte uns in der Siedlung umgeführt. Wir können sie alles über Indien fragen. In den ersten beiden Tagen blieb sie bis Mitternacht bei uns, sie machte mit unserem Jump Food Party mit, hatte uns bei unseren Partner besucht. Sie ist gerade dabei, für uns einen Kochkurs zu organisieren, sie lotete aus, ein Bollywoodstudiobesuch für uns auszuloten. Sie ist die beste Supporterin, noch viel wichtiger, die beste Freundin man sich wünschen kann.

Dank Wikipedia habe ich auch den Namen des Slums herausgefunden, den wir jeden Tag zwei Mal passieren. Es ist Dharavi, die mittlerweile zweitgrößte Slum von Asien. Ich werde zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt über meinen Gedanken dazu schreiben, möchte jetzt nur so viel sagen: Ich habe sehr viel Respekt vor Menschen, die hier wohlen und sich trotzdem sauber und anmutig halten und lächern.

孟买第四天。今天我们继续我们的工作。我们的进展很顺利。我们与负责我们这个项目的经理Narayan先生会晤，报告我们的进展，我想他对此很满意。

今天我主要想介绍我们的CDS当地助手Kabi。Kabi是我碰到过的最热心和最友好的人之一。她对于我们来说是无价的帮助，也是所有人极好的朋友，我想我可以这样说。她在美国出生，在旧金山生活了很久。她曾经在IBM工作过，后来转到CDS，她在孟买已经住了很久了。她去机场接我们，向我们介绍这座城市，领我们熟悉周围的环境。我们可以问她任何关于印度的问题。在开始的两天里她疾呼陪我们到子夜。她参加我们的零食聚会，帮助我们组织烹饪课程，寻找机会让我们去参观宝莱坞。她是一个人能够想象得出来的最好的助手，但是更重要的是最好的朋友。

通过维基百科我找到了我们每天两次经过的那个贫民窟的名字：Dharavi。它目前是亚洲第二大的贫民窟。

Day Three in Mumbai

Day Three in Mumbai. Today is the first day that we work at the client site. At the morning we were picked up by a car sent by Avert society. Actually the car arrived far too early. It arrived already at 7:30 although we should depart at 8:45. I almost thought that my watch is going wrong.

The ride go through a slum neighbourhood. The scatters there are actually undescribable. The street went parallel to a creek. So on the one side is the street while on the other side is the scatter. Small houses built with sheet metal, clothes, loam. It is fully crawded, thousands of people living in houses that look worse than the landfill site in Germany. But even at places here women wear colorful and clean sari or other traditional clothes. Men dress normally not so elegant.

The Avert society is located at a place that is originally used by a hospital for leprosy. It is still a hospital for leprosy, but three buildings are now used for organizations against AIDS. Avert occupies one of the building, the state and the city agency occupy the other two buildings. The whole place is like a park, with a lot of trees and very quiet and beautiful. The building itself is not big. The officies inside the building are all very small. We were greeted very warmly. They had set up an office for us. At the morning they all said, this is the first day for you, you don't need to work today. But actually we are set up fully before noon and started to work after lunch. We interviewed people about their work and their experiences with the IT infrastructure of the organization and analysed the answeres we got. At about six o'clock in the evening we were again picked up.

In the evening there are very large bats flying throw the sky. Their flight are very different as the small bats. The small bats are moving very unsteadily and turning arround a lot. These huge bats fly like big birds, they move their wings in a far more slower and steadier manner and they fly in one direction and turn only slowly. Their flight are more birdlike. They are bigger than Crow. I suspect they are Indian Flying-fox. They are simply amazing, if you don't see one really you cannot believe that there are bats that big.

After dinner we made a junk food party. Everyone had brought with them some junk food of their country. There are some with really amazing tastes. My favorite is from Brazil, a sort of jelly with the taste of mellon. It was a very funny party.

Dritter Tag in Mumbai, der erste Tag, an dem wir direkt beim Partner arbeiten. Am Morgen wurden wir mit einem Wagen vom Partner abgeholt. Große Überraschung: Der Wagen war überüberpünktlich da, obwohl wir uns um 8:45 verabredet haben, war er schon um 7:30 da. Ich habe fast gedacht, meine Uhr geht falsch.

 

Die Fahrt führte durch einem Slumgebiet. Die Behäusungen dort sind unbeschreiblich. Die Straße lief parallel zu einem Kanal. Auf der einen Seite ist die Straße, auf der anderen die Behäusungen, aus Blech, Stoffe und Lehm zusammengesetzten kleinen Häusen. Es war völlig überfüllt. Tausenden von Menschen leben in Häuser, die noch schlimmer aussehen als die Müllhalden in Deutschland. Aber selbst hier sind Frauen in farbenfrohen und sauberen Sari oder anderen traditionellen Kleidung angezogen. Männer sind generell weniger elegant angezogen.

Die Avert Society ist untergebracht in einem früheren Leprakrankenhaus. Das Gelände wird zum Teil immer noch von dem Leprakrankenhaus benutzt, aber drei Gebäuden werden an AIDS-Gesellschaften überlassen. Avert besetzt eins davon, die anderen zwei werden von den entsprechenden Landes- und Stadtgesellschaften besetzt. Das ganze Geländer wirkt wie ein Park mitten in eine Stadt, mit vielen großen Bäumen, sehr ruhig und sehr schön. Das Gebäude an sich ist ziemlich klein, mit sehr kleinen Büros darin. Wir wurden sehr freundliche aufgenommen, zogen in einem Büro ein. Am Morgen sagten sie uns, heute sei der erste Tag für Euch, heute bräuchte Ihr nicht zu arbeiten. Aber in der Tat kamen wir schneller in die Fahrt. Zum Mittagszeit waren wir bereits eingerichtet und nach dem Mittagsessen haben wir bereits unsere Arbeit aufgenommen und begannen, Mitarbeiter unserer Partner zu interviewen. Um Sechs Uhr abends wurden wir wieder abgeholt.

Am Abend flogen riesigen Fledermäusen durch den Himmel. Ihr Flug sind ganz anders als die kleine Fledermäusen. Die kleine Fledermäusen flogen in eine sehr unstete Bahn und änderten ständig ihre Richtung. Die Riesenfledermäusen fliegen mehr wie Vögeln, sie schlagen ihren Flügel viel langsamer und regelmäßiger und sie fliegen sehr gerade. Ihr Flug ähneln eher Vögeln. Sie sind größer als Krähen. Ich vermute, dass es sich um Indischen Riesenflughunde (Pteropus giganteus) handelt. Ihr Ansicht ist sehr erstaunlich. Ohne sie wirklich gesehen zu haben kann man nicht glauben, dass es so große Fledermäuse gibt.

Nach dem Abenessen machten wir noch ein Junk Food Party. Jeder brachten Junk Food ihrer Länder mit. Es gab wirklich erstaunliche Geschmäcker. Mein Favorit kommt aus Brasilien, es ist eine Art Gelatine in Mellonengeschmack. Es war ein sehr lustige Party.

孟买第三天。今天我们首次在顾客的地方工作。早晨他们派车来接我们。虽然我们约好的时间是8：45，但是车7：30就到了，我以为我的表坏了。

上班的路通过一个贫民窟。这里的住房实在无法描述。街道沿着一条阴沟走，街道在阴沟的一边，贫民窟在另一边。里面矮小的房屋是由铁皮板、布料和粘土堆积成的，它们看上去比德国的垃圾堆还要糟糕。虽然如此这里的妇女印染穿着非常色彩鲜艳、整洁的纱丽或其它传统衣服。男人的衣服没有这么好看。

Avert Society的办公室在一个过去的麻风病院里。这个地方现在依然是一个麻风病院，但是其中的三座建筑被让给艾滋病组织了。Avert占据了一座建筑，其它的两座分别由州和市的相关部门占据。整个地方像一座公园一样，里面有许多树木，非常安静和美丽。办公室的建筑不大，里面的办公室也非常小。他们腾出一间来给我们。我们早上到的时候被非常热情地接待。他们说：今天你们刚到，因此不必工作。但是实际上我们比预计的进展得快，到中午我们就已经可以工作了，下午我们开始采访他们的工作人员。傍晚六点钟车又把我们送回旅店。

傍晚的时候天空里会有非常大的蝙蝠飞。他们的飞行与小的蝙蝠不一样。小的蝙蝠飞的时候不断更改方向，显得非常不稳定，但是这些大蝙蝠飞的时候翅膀扇动比较慢和稳定，飞行的方向也很直线。它们的飞行更像鸟。它们比乌鸦大。 我估计这些是大狐蝠。不真正看到它们很难想象世界上会有这么大的蝙蝠。

晚饭后我们还举办了一次零食聚会。每人带来自己国家的零食。其中有些的味道非常奇怪。我最喜欢的是巴西来的一种果冻。

Day Two in Mumbai

Day Two in Mumbai. Today is a very important day. We meet our project partners for the first time. At 10:00 we went downstairs to the meeting room of the hotel.

There was some opening speechs. IBM Business Advisor Ramesh Narasimham talked about IBM in India and about indian business culture. One thing he mentioned that is very interesting is that actually IBM India is doing a very big part domestic business. The perception from outside is maybe that IBM India is mainly doing Global Delivery. But obviously this is only part of their business. They have also a very big part of outsourcing business, for example for Indian telecommunication companies, and a big part of service and research department.

Miguel and I will work for the AVERT Society. We had had a phone call with Mr.Narayan already, who is the financial manager of the society and obviously the manager of this project. This is the first time that we meet him in person. He is an elder person, very friendly. He brought with him Dr. Rao, the Capacity Building Specialist and Mr. Babar, the System Officer. Dr. Rao is very charming. He is actually a medicine doctor. He told us a lot of things about HIV, HIV infection, AIDS, AIDS prevention, problems in India and in Bombey, etc. He seems to be the business specialist from the Avert team. He is really nice and I love to talk and work with him. Mr. Babar is the IT system responsible of the society. He is very quiet. I hope this would change with the time when we work more intensively together.

So our task is to help to evaluate the system performance of the society and to make suggestions how to improve it. We should also review the processes of the society and make suggestions for improvement. Dr. Rao had also expressed the wish that we could make suggestions to improve the HR process. This is not the specialist field of Miguel and me, but we have Sue in our team, who is the HR specialist. I am sure we will take the advantage of her knowledge and experiences.

I think from all the projects ours is the most technician. It is very interesting and doable. Tomorrow we will be on site of the society and study the situations on site, so that we can evaluate the scope for the next 29 days.

After the meeting the team said that they want to go to Mumbai downtown with the taxi to see the city. So we took three taxis and began the ride through the traffic of Mumbai. I shared a taxi with three ladies, Sandra, Dawn and Sue. The taxi is very small. The ride took more than an hour, although the traffic was not that at that time into the city was not that bad yet. It was a horrific ride and when we arrived the Gateway of India we were totally exhausted. Directly beside the gate is the Taj Mahal Hotel. After another horrific but short ride we came to a waterfront, I believe it is the Sir Dorab Tata Road. So we looked out into the open Indian Ocean. After that we took a ride to the Fashion street. But because it was raining heavily we left it soon. On the way back we stopped by a shopping mall with a McDonald. Some of us got a Cheeseburg or a Vegetableburg. But most of us found an Indian restaurante alone the street. It was a restaurante for Indians. When we arrived it was about 20:00 and it is quite empty. Later a lot of big indian familties came. With children and grandparent. The ride with taxi back to hotel was not less horrible. The highway was jammed. It was stop and go. I really got car sick.

Tag Zwei in Mumbai. Heute ist ein wichtiger Tag. Zum ersten Mal trafen wir unseren Projektparter in Person. Um 10:00 waren wir alle unten im Hotelmeetingroom.

Es gab einpaar Eröffnungsansprache. IBM Business Advisor Ramesh Narasimham sprach über IBM India und das hiesige Businesskultur. Er sagte, dass IBM India sehr viele einheimische Business macht. Die Wahrnehmung von aussen ist, dass IBM India hauptsächlich Global Delivery macht. Aber offensichtlich haben sie auch eine sehr große Outsourcing (zum Beispiel große indische Telekomunternehmen), ein große Service und eine Forschungsabteilung haben.

Miguel und ich werden für AVERT Society arbeiten. Wir hatten bereits mit Herrn Narayan gesprochen, der Finanzmanager der Organisation und offensichtlich verantwortlicher Manager für dieses Projekt. Dies ist das erste Mal dass wir ihn persönlich treffen. Er ist ein älterer Herr, sehr freudnlich. Mit ihm kamen Dr. Rao, Capaciy Building Specialist und Mr. Mahesh Babar, System Officer. Dr. Rao ist sehr charmant. Er ist ein Mediziner. Er erzählte vieles über HIV, HIV-Infektion, AIDS, AIDS-Prevention, Situation in Indien und Bombey etc. Anscheinend ist er der Fachmann in diesem Projekt auf der Avert-Seite. Er ist sehr nett. Ich habe viele Freude mit ihm zu unterhalten. Mr. Babar ist der IT Verantwortlicher der Organization. Er ist sehr ruhig. Ich hoffe dies ändert sich mit der Zeit wenn er mit uns intensiver zusammenarbeitet.

Unsere Aufgabe ist die Systemperformance der Organization zu überprüfen und Vorschläge für Verbesserungen zu machen. Wir sollen auch den Prozess der Organization reviewen und Vorschläge für Verbesserung einbringen. Dr. Rao hatte auch den Wunsch geäußert, dass wir Verbesserungsvorschläge zum HR-Prozess machen könnten. Da mangelt es bei Miguel und ich an Skills. Aber möglicherweise kann Sue uns dabei unterstützen.

Mein Eindruck ist, dass von allen Projekten unsere am meisten technischer Natur ist. Es ist interessant und erreichbar. Morgen werden wir bei der Organization arbeiten und die Situation vor Ort abschätzen, so dass wir ein Scope für die Arbeit der nächsten 29 Tagen machen können.

Nach dem Meeting wollte das Team noch mit dem Taxi ins Zentrum von Bombey fahren. Wir teilten uns in drei Taxen auf und begann durch die Verkeht der Stadt zu schlängeln. Ich teilte ein Taxi mit drei Damen: Sandra, Dawn und Sue. Der Taxi ist sehr klein. Die Fahrt dauerte übre eine Stunde, obwohl zu diese Zeit die Verkehr in die Stadt hinein noch nicht so schlimm war. Trotzdem war es eine furchtbare Fahr. Als wir das Gateway of India errreichten, waren wir völlig ausgelaugt. Direkt gegenüber den Torbogen liegt das berühmte Taj Mahal Hotel. Nach einer anderen furchtbaren aber kurzen Fahrt erreichten wir eine Straße vor dem Meer. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, glaube aber, dass es die Sir Dorab Tata Road ist, von hier blickten wir also in das offene indische Ozean. Danach fuhren wir zur Fashion Street. Aber da es furchtbar regnete, fuhren wir gleich wieder los. Wir kamen zu eine kleine Schoppingpassage mit einem McDonalds. Einige von uns bestellten ein Cheeseburger oder ein vegetarisches Burger. Die anderen fanden ein indisches Restaurante entlang der Straße. Als wir um 20:00 eintrafen, war sie noch füllig leer. Erst nach und nach füllte sie sich, hauptsächlich mit große Familien mit vielen Kindern und Großeltern. Die Fahrt zurück zum Hotel war nicht minder furchtbar. Es war ein ständige Stop and Go, von dem ich richtig Seekrank wurde.

孟买第二日。今天很重要，今天我们第一次与我们的顾客碰头，因此十点钟我们都聚集在楼下旅店的会议室。

会议有几次讲话。 其中包括一名IBM业务顾问的讲话。他讲话的内容是IBM在印度的情况和印度的商务习俗。他说IBM在印度有很大一部分是国内市场。这与外界的映像差别很大。外界的映像是印度的IBM主要是搞外包的。但是他们也有很大的国内外包、服务和研究部门。

会议后小组还决定坐出租车去孟买市中心。我们分三辆车。我与Sandra、Dawn和Sue分一辆车。车很小，虽然当时入市的交通还不很恶，但是我们用了足足一个多小时的时间。我们在印度门下车。门的对面是著名的泰姬陵酒店。然后我们去一条滨海街，我估计是Sir Dorab Tata Road，从这里可以看印度洋。然后我们去“时装街”。但是因为下大雨，我们很快就走了。在回旅店的路上我们经过一个市场，哪里有一家麦当劳，一些人买了个汉堡包或者素汉堡包。其他人在附近的街上找到一个饭店。我们达到时是晚上八点钟，饭店里很空，此后才慢慢地开始有人，主要是有许多孩子和老人的大家庭。回旅店的路比去市中心还糟糕，车走走停停，我都觉得晕车了。

Day One in Bombey

Day One in Bombey. I arrived Bombey last night (actually today morning) at 1:00 AM. The go through the immigration was very easy. The baggage came very fast. When I left the airport the humide and warm air hit me, but not quite so bad as I had feared. Actually after a day, now, I like this air.

Kabi, our local facilitator, is waiting for me. She had actually already had a very long day. I am the last in the arrival queue and she had already picked nine of us.

The ride to the hotel is quite short. The hotel is located in a normal suburb neighborhood of the Greater Mumbai. Although I was not very tired, I took a shower and went to sleep.

Daylight and heavy rain awaked me at about 8:00 am. I stood up, checked internet connection, wrote a note to home about the safe arriving. Then I went to the roof restaurante to see if anyone from the team is also there. Actually they are. I met Susan, Clai and Sandra. Later others came too: Do Yeon, Cecilia, Doug, Fabio, Miguel and Dawn. It was really funny to see them alive after those virtual teamings in the past two months. And despite all the virtual teamings to meet the real person is very differently. This is actually my experience since back to the Fido-Net-Days. Already that time we often experienced that people come out as very differently as you have imagined just by the online-contact.

At 10:30 AM we began our work. Today is orientation. Kabi introduced us the city and our clients. Rob from CDC (CDC is the IBM partner to find local clients and to organize CSC logistics) explained the concept of success measurement for the project and we discussed about how this can be done by the individual clients. Although we had a already talked and asked a lot of questions, there are still a lot of them about the culture and live here. Questions come when you are here and see things. That's another experience that virtual preparations cannot fulfill.

After that we went out for lunch. Kabi would lead us on a neighbourhood tour. One thing that totally difers CSC experience with other asignment is that you would not be put in an isolated business hotel. Actually the hotel that we are in is a very small one, in the middle of a suburb neighbourhood of the Greater Mumbai. It's a very simple hotel, no luxuaries that you would expect as a businessmen, but clean and friendly. The neighbourhood is a very crowded, normal place. I am not sure, but I think in China you would say this is a place where the under middle class live. The buildings looks old and mostly worn, the streets are uneven, full of Rickshaws and people. Small stores and markets align the streets. I especially love the flowers they sale on the market because they smell so good. They bound them with a string for decoration and for the smell. Flowers, Vegetables and fruits are the best on the market.

Most beautiful are also the Indien women, they look so noble and nice in their colorful sari and dupatta.

Later I went with Clai, Sue and Sandra to a nearby coffee shop. Kabi said that it is a chain like Starbucks in America or Europe. It was a very nice place with a lot of young people, nice services and very tasty ice coffee. I am sure it would be our favorite place to hang out in the evening in the next four weeks.

Tag eins in Bombey. Ich erreichte Bombey letzte Nacht (in der Tat heute Morgen) um 1:00. Ich kam zügig durch die Grenze und Zoll, auch das Gepäck kam schnell. In der Tat traf ich dort Susan, Clai und Sandra. Später kamen auch die anderen: Do-Yeon, Cecilia, Doug, Fabio, Miguel und Dawn. Sie life zu sehen ist witzig. Obwohl wir bereits zwei Monate Virtual Team Building hinter uns hatten waren sie in Person völlig anders. Diese Erfahrung machte ich bereits während den Fido-Net-Tagen.

Um 10:30 begann user Arbeitstag. Heute ist Orietierung angesagt. Kabi stellte uns die Stadt und unseren Partner vor. Rob von CDC (CDC ist die NGO, denen IBM beauftragt hat, um lokale Projekte auszusuchen und um Logistiks für CSC zu erledigen) erklärte das Konzept der Erfolgsmessung für die Projekte. Wir diskutierten darüber, wie diese bei den einzelnen Partner aussehen könnten. Obwohl wir bereits in der Vergangenheit viele Fragen gestellt haben, haben wir immer noch viele Fragen zu stellen. Auch dies ist eine Erfahrung, die virtuelle Vorbereitung nicht erfüllen können: Fragen kommen, wenn man da ist.

Danach gingen wir aus zum Mittagsessen. Eine Sache, die CSC Einsätze grundsätzlich mit anderen Assignment unterscheidet, ist, dass man nicht in einem isolierten Business-Hotel untergebracht wird. In der Tat ist unser Hotel ziemlich klein, mitten in einem einheimischen Wohngebiet. Es ist sehr einfach, keine Luxus, die man von einem Businesshotel erwarten könnte, aber sauber und freundlich. Das Stadtteil ist ein überfülltes, normales Ort. Ich bin mir indische Verhältnisse nicht sicher, aber in China würde man es als ein Wohngebiet der unteren Mittelschicht klassifizieren. Die Gebäuden sind alt und heruntergekommen, die Staßen uneben, volle Rickschas und Menschen. Kleine Läden und Markt umzaunt die Straßen. Ich mag besonders die Blumen, die sie auf dem Markt verkaufen, weil sie so schön duften. Sie werden mit Faden zusammengebunden und dienen als Dekoration. Blumen, Gemüsen und Früchten sind die Besten auf dem Markt.

Auch indische Frauen sind mit ihren bunten Sari und Dupattas sehr schön anzusehen. Sie sind sehr anmutig.

Später gingen Clai, Sue, Sandra und ich noch zu einem nahgelegenen Café. Kabi sagte es ist so was wie das Mumbai Starbucks. Es ist ein sehr gemütliches Platz mit vielen jungen Kunden, sehr nette Service und sehr gute Eiskaffee. Ich bin sicher es wird in den nächsten vier Wochen zu unserem Lieblingsplatz für Abenden.

孟买第一天。昨晚（或者说今晨）1点我到达孟买。出境和取行李都很快。走出机场时一阵潮湿的热气袭来，但是比我想象的要好得多。事实上一天后我就已经开始喜欢这个气候了。

我们的当地助手Kabi在机场外等我。她已经工作了一长天了，我是最后一个到达的，此前她已经接了九个人了。

旅店离机场很近，位于大孟买的一个居民区里。虽然我不很困，我还是冲了下凉就睡觉了。

8点钟时天光和大雨把我唤醒。我起床，试了试网络，给家里报了个安就上楼顶的餐厅去看是不是有组里的其他人已经在那里早餐了。我在那里碰到Susan、Clai和Sandra。后来其他人也到了：Do-Yeon、Cecilia、Doug、Fabio、Miguel和Dawn。虽然我们通过网络已经组合了两个月了，真的碰到他们还是很有意思。一个人在网络上留下的映像往往与实际生活里的不一样。

10:30我们的工作日开始。今天是熟悉环境。Kabi向我们介绍城市和我们的顾客。CDC（CDC是帮助IBM设计当地项目以及完成CSC物流的非政府组织）的Rob介绍怎样测量项目是否成功。我们讨论每个顾客的测量参数。虽然在过去两个月里我们已经提了许多问题了，但是我们还是有许多问题要提。通过网络的准备总是无法弥补真正的实践，许多问题要到了这里才提得出来。

此后我们去午餐。CSC与其它国外项目不同的一点是我们不是被安排在一个隔绝的商务酒店。事实上我们的旅店很小，位于一个一般居民区里。它是一个很简单的旅店，没有商业旅店的豪华，但是很干净，很友好。这个居民区是一个人山人海的普通居民区。我不了解印度的情况，但是从中国的标准来痕量住在这里的属于中下阶层的人。房屋陈旧，表面肮脏，街道破旧，街上满是人和三轮车，街道边上是小店铺和市场。我特别喜欢卖花的铺子，因为它们很香。他们把花用线穿起来作为装饰。鲜花、蔬菜和水果是市场上最好看的东西。

印度的妇女穿着色彩鲜艳的莎丽和头巾显得非常美丽和优雅。

后来我又和Clai、Sue和Sandra一起去了一个附近的咖啡馆。Kabi说它相当于欧美的星巴克。这是一个很舒适的地方，有许多年轻的顾客，很友好的服务员和非常可口的冰咖啡。我肯定这里将是今后四个星期里我们傍晚最喜欢去的地方。
